Krampus and Nikolo

Everyone knows St. Nikolaus, but who is his companion actually? Krampus, his alter-identity, comes from the darkness. He is the evil as opposed to the good, the flipside of the coin, undeniably male. But Krampus can also quite easily be feminine or “Krampa”. In the week before the 6th December, you can see Krampus in all the squares around Millstatt Lake at the traditional “Perchentläufen”.

So who was Nikolaus actually? He lived from 270 to 342 A.D. and was the bishop of Myra (Turkey). There are many legends about him. He is claimed to have been imprisoned during the persecution of Christians. Because saint Nikolaus helped so many people in distress, he is also known as the “helper in times of need”. He is the patron saint of the children and pupils as well as sailors.

He is also called upon to help when there is danger from water. Since the 16th century it has been a well-known traditional belief that obedient children are given talents. The others have to deal with Krampus or the servant, Ruprecht, as he is also known. He is a chained devil and punishes the naughty boys
